Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, born in Merzifon in 1952, is one of Türkiye’s most distinguished psychiatrists, academics, and thought leaders. He graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty in 1975, later specializing in psychiatry at GATA in 1982. Over his career, he has held positions as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Clinical Director, and eventually Professor of Psychiatry (1996). He also served as a Colonel in the Turkish Armed Forces before voluntarily retiring. Prof. Tarhan has held academic and clinical roles at leading institutions including Yüzüncü Yıl University, the Forensic Medicine Institute, and as Türkiye’s representative at the Memory Center of America. In 2006, he founded NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital, Türkiye’s first neuropsychiatric hospital, followed by Üsküdar University in 2011—both established through the donation of all his personal assets. A prolific researcher, Prof. Tarhan has authored over 300 scientific publications (125 indexed in Web of Science) and more than 100 books and chapters, some of which have been translated into multiple languages including English, Persian, Albanian, and Azerbaijani. His academic impact is reflected in a Google Scholar h-index of 39, i10 index of 112, and nearly 6,000 citations. His books have sold over 1 million copies. Beyond academia, Prof. Tarhan is widely recognized for bridging science and religion, integrating his metacognitive and spiritual perspective into his psychiatric work. His writings address profound questions on the meaning of life, existence, belief, and the relationship between science and faith. He is the President of Üsküdar University and Chair of the NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Board, continuing to advance neuropsychiatric research and education. Under his leadership, Üsküdar University has grown into a “brain base” with over 24,000 students, recognized globally as the only Turkish university participating in the G20/N20 Summits. In 2020, his team’s work on Computational Psychiatry and Future Perspectives was presented at the American Psychiatry Association (APA) Congress, later selected as one of the APA’s featured monthly courses. Prof. Tarhan is fluent in English and German, married with two children, and continues to dedicate his life to investing in people, advancing psychiatric science, and shaping future generations of scholars.
