Dr. Jacob Cheng is an experienced eye doctor with nearly 10 years of clinical practice. He currently sees patients at Mount Elizabeth Novena, Mount Elizabeth, and Parkway East Hospitals. His main focus is treating retinal and vitreous eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal blood vessel conditions, and inherited retinal disorders. Dr. Cheng has extensive experience in modern eye surgeries. He has performed many small-incision cataract surgeries using advanced lenses such as wavefront, toric, and multifocal intraocular lenses. He is also skilled in laser vision correction procedures, including femto-laser bladeless LASIK and Epi-LASIK. He graduated from the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in 1995 and later completed his postgraduate medical qualifications in surgery and ophthalmology in 2002. In 2006, he finished his advanced specialty training and became a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He also received special training in eye electrophysiology at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London under Professor Graham Holder. Before starting his private practice, Dr. Cheng worked as a consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre. During this time, he was the first to report slow vision (bradyopsia) in an Asian patient and a rare complication following fluorescein angiography. He continues to serve as a Visiting Consultant at the centre. Dr. Cheng is actively involved in medical research and is an Adjunct Research Scientist at the Singapore Eye Research Institute. His main research interest is age-related macular degeneration. His work has been published in leading international ophthalmology journals, and he frequently speaks at global and regional medical conferences. In 2006, he received the TEI-Pfizer Research Award for his contributions to eye research. In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Cheng is passionate about teaching. He serves as a Clinical Teacher at the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
