Schulthess Klinik has been supported by the non-profit Wilhelm Schulthess Foundation since 1935. People, their mobility, and their quality of life are at the center of the clinic’s mission. The clinic has evolved remarkably over the years, achieving significant technological and scientific advancements—from the early days of Wilhelm Schulthess to its current status as a world-renowned center of excellence. A Legacy of Orthopedic Innovation Wilhelm Schulthess (1855–1917), initially an internist, pediatrician, and general practitioner, soon dedicated himself to orthopedics. In 1883, together with his surgical partner Dr. August Leuning, he founded the “Orthopedic Institute” on Löwenstrasse in Zurich. Schulthess later became co-founder and the first chief physician of Balgrist Hospital, which opened in 1912. In 1985, the Department of Health of the Canton of Zurich provided land in Lengghalde for the construction of a new orthopedic center. Since 1995, Schulthess Klinik has operated from state-of-the-art facilities located between Balgrist and Burghölzli on Zurich’s outskirts. In 2006, a new wing was added to meet the growing demand for surgeries and advanced medical procedures. A Modern Center of Excellence Today, Schulthess Klinik performs approximately 12,000 musculoskeletal surgeries and medical procedures every year. The clinic hosts its own research department and holds top training accreditation: • A-status in orthopedic surgery • B-status in hand surgery It is also officially recognized as a Swiss Olympic Medical Center. Swiss Olympic Medical Center – Excellence in Sports Medicine As a Swiss Olympic Medical Center, Schulthess Klinik provides comprehensive care for elite athletes, amateurs, and individuals returning to sport. After an accurate and detailed diagnosis, each patient receives a fully personalized treatment plan designed to optimize performance and recovery. The clinic includes departments of sports medicine, performance diagnostics, and sports physiotherapy, working in close synergy with other highly specialized units of the institution.
