Quironsalud Proton Therapy Center
As one of Europe’s largest and most advanced hospital groups, Quironsalud continues to set new standards in medical innovation. In late 2019, the Quironsalud Group launched the Quironsalud Proton Therapy Center, a groundbreaking project designed to bring world-class cancer treatment to Spain. A State-of-the-Art Center Equipped With the Latest Technology The center is the first of its kind in the country, featuring some of the most advanced technologies in modern radiation oncology, including: Proteus One® proton irradiation system High-definition CT scanning Surface-guided radiation therapy systems Monte-Carlo dose calculation algorithms The infrastructure was created with patient comfort in mind. The facility includes: 5 waiting rooms 2 consultation suites 2 post-anesthetic recovery rooms The center’s mission is to serve as a hub for technological excellence, continuously improving proton therapy techniques to benefit patients long-term. Expert Oncology Team The medical team includes highly respected radiation oncologists, each with more than 20 years of experience, such as: Dr. Raymond Mirabell Dr. Karme Ares Dr. Juan Castro About Proton Therapy Proton therapy is an innovative form of radiation treatment introduced in Spain for the first time by Quironsalud. It is particularly effective for tumors in sensitive areas such as the eye, brain, spine, and pediatric cancers. Key Benefits of Proton Therapy The center uses the Proteus One® system, considered one of the most advanced technologies available today. What Sets Proteus One® Apart? High level of safety 220° rotational capability around the patient Ability to deliver radiation from multiple angles with pinpoint accuracy Supports future advancements like FLASH therapy and rotational proton therapy Another essential element is the synchrocyclotron, which adjusts proton speeds precisely according to each patient’s treatment needs. How Proton Therapy Works High-energy protons are directed at the tumor site. They release their maximum energy directly inside the tumor, sparing surrounding healthy tissues. Protons stop precisely at the tumor, reducing accidental radiation exposure. This significantly lowers the risk of long-term side effects and secondary tumors. Cancers Treated With Proton Therapy According to the Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology, over 1,000 patients in Spain qualify for proton therapy every year. Conditions that can be treated include: Pediatric cancers Spine tumors Lung cancer Head & neck sarcoma Skull base tumors Breast cancer Ocular tumors Why Proton Therapy Is Gaining Global Recognition Proton therapy is considered one of the safest and most advanced forms of radiation treatment due to: Adjustable, highly controlled radiation dosing Exceptional accuracy Minimal impact on surrounding tissues Low risk of secondary tumors These advantages improve treatment safety and overall quality of life for patients. Patient Journey at Quironsalud Proton Therapy Center Preliminary Evaluation An interdisciplinary team (radiation oncologists, pediatric specialists, etc.) reviews all medical reports to confirm eligibility. Personalized Treatment Plan A fully customized therapy plan is created for each patient. Initial Consultation Doctors explain the entire process and answer all questions. Diagnostic Imaging The patient undergoes an HD CT scan for precise treatment planning. Custom Immobilization Mask Each patient receives a mask tailored to maintain correct positioning during sessions. Ambient Experience Setup Using Philips Ambient® technology, patients select calming visual themes to enhance comfort. Treatment Session The patient remains still while the Proteus One® system rotates up to 220° to deliver targeted proton beams. Radiation delivery lasts only a few minutes. Proton Therapy Success Rates While success rates are similar to other advanced radiation therapies, proton therapy offers superior safety, especially for sensitive tumor locations. Cancer Type Success Rate Prostate Cancer (Stage 1–3) 99% Breast Cancer (Early stages) 97.2% Lung Cancer 86.5% Head & Neck Cancer 66.8%
